Riding Motorcycles When You Have Young Kids At Home...

Guys-

Sorry for the sporadic posting here as of late. Started a new job this month and I am "drinking from a firehose." Still making my vids though!

This week's Moto Mouth focuses on the controversial issue of riding motorcycles when you still have young kids at home. Some give up riding altogether. Some curtail it. And some keep on going.... How did you handle it?

Inside the #BMW #Scrambler Product Launch

Hello All-

Recently I was invited on behalf of MCN to attend BMW's formal US launch of the Scrambler model. The specs and impressions of this bike will soon flood the moto-mags and websites, so I thought I'd focus instead on what it was like to experience the press launch itself. It isn't often that one occurs here in NJ, so here's what it's like to attend......

BMW R NineT Scrambler Launch

I was invited to BMW's Scrambler launch to cover the event for MCN. What an experience! BMW pulled out all the stops, and it was full luxury from beginning to end. We rode an eclectic mix of Northwest NJ's serpentine backroads, some light off roading, and then proceeded to battle rush hour New York City traffic. It was fantastic to meet so many fellow moto-journalists, some of whom I've been reading and admiring for years! Here are some pics....

Reevu MSX1 Rear View Helmet Review

Hello Everyone-

This week's Moto Mouth delves deep into Reevu's latest MSX1 Rear View Full Face helmet. This lid has a purely mechanical rear view system built into the shell, which allows the rider a continuous 180 degree rear view! Is this functional, or just hype? Tune in to find out!

Changes in the Works...

Big changes coming.

After 22 years I am leaving my "real job" at the end of the month, and moving onto something new and exciting. It will very likely occupy all of my time for the first few months, but I will endeavor to keep on writing and making my videos as usual. Ironically, I think it's the videos that helped get me this new job!

I've got 3 new articles in the works - an in-depth look at Spiegel, which I've determined is in fact the Ace Cafe of the east coast USA, except with far better food. There are so many interesting angles to the story, and the owner of the place is a true enthusiast!

Then, a review of the Stayin' Safe road-riding school, which is coming up the first weekend of October. I just bought another Go-Pro so I can try to film things from multiple angles.

I've also been invited to the formal unveiling of the BMW Scrambler in early October as well. The common denominator in all of these stories is they involve being on-site, so it looks like some of the Moto Mouth videos are going to start being travel / on-location pieces. Let's see if the viewers like it!

We've just surpassed 450 subscribers and almost 22,000 page views as of today. Not bad for a few months!

This Sunday's episode on the Moto Mouth channel https://www.youtube.com/c/motomouthmoshe is going to focus on the Reevu MSX1 rear-view full face helmet. I just submitted the formal article to Thunder Press a few weeks ago, and this video will allow the readers to see what the rider sees as he/she looks backwards. It was very, very difficult to film properly because of all the weird angles involved, but I did the best I could using the Iphone's cam, which seemed to work best.

Tune in this Sunday night by 11pm EST!

My Motorcycle Relief Project article in Motorcycle Consumer News

Hello All

Every once in awhile, I'm allowed to stretch my legs a little and write about more than just product reviews. Recently, I had the chance to interview some wounded warriors from our armed forces - men who have been through hell and back. Hearing their harrowing stories changed my world perception in profound ways, as did learning about a special charity which has been helping these vets get back on their feet, using the healing power of.... motorcycles. Specifically, GS motorcycles! GS motorcycles - successfully restoring sanity where all the shrinks, the VA, pills, therapy, and everything else completely failed.

I'm proud of this new article called "Winning The Inner Battle," which came out in Motorcycle Consumer News today, and I hope with the publicity it generates, in some small way, I can help these men who have fought for our country and now need us to stand behind them. Thanks to endurance rider Carl Reese for introducing me to MRP Founder Tom Larson at the BMW MOA Das Rally this past July, which allowed me this opportunity!

PS - I know some of you out there were once Motorcycle Consumer News subscribers, and let your subscriptions lapse when things got rocky last year. Good news: The new editor (David Hilgendorf) has been busy getting things fired up again. Page count is back up where it used to be. All the heavyweights are back: David Hough, Fred Rau, Dave Searle, etc. We've got legal and medical perspective in every issue, and now big features like this MRP article and interviews with industry insiders in every issue. MCN is now so much more than just product reviews. Consider resubscribing if you left, because it's shaping up to be better than ever.

Things Are Rockin' And Rollin'

Hello All-

Things have been crazy busy on the moto-journalism front as of late. I can't remember a happier time professionally in my life. If only I could do this full time, I would be living the dream. Alas, I have obligations which exceed what I can provide from writing. Nevertheless, it's exciting to wake up each day, with so many article ideas floating around in my brain.

I assembled this rack in my office and began to populate it with some of the stuff waiting for test or in process of being evaluated. After I took this picture I filled it with the rest of the items, in the order I plan to get to them. Some of it is colder weather gear, so I'll be able to get started on that once fall hits. I love being organized, and moving all this into my office means it's the first thing I see each morning. New fodder for articles and videos!

#Scorpion sent over this suit for testing. I've been really impressed with what these guys are doing in the midpriced segment. SAS-Tec armor, nice construction, understated styling.... Every time I get one of their products, I'm reminded how competitive things are out there. When I first started riding, you had to pay an arm and a leg for some of these features. Now, every newbie can afford them.

And in other earth-shattering news, this exhaust header nut FINALLY arrived from DG Exhaust for my YSR50. The poor YSR has been sidelined since May due to a stripped nut, and DG was..... unresponsive, to put it mildly. But, at last, the replacement is here, and theYSR50 is roadworthy again. It's going to be a hoot to ride a few times before the season ends.

My top secret MCN article will come out in a few weeks - the editors seemed to enjoy it, which was gratifying since I poured my heart into it. I've got a few more in the works right now including finishing up the Scorpion EXO-GT3000 modular helmet test, the MCN Holiday Gift Guide, and a new Shoei Neotec helmet just arrived too.....

Business Casual - With Padding!

I've spent the last month commuting in these Aerostich Protekt Khakis. They're a pretty novel idea - cotton twill exterior with generic Dockers styling, and hidden pockets to store TF3 armor pads in the knees. The armor goes in and comes out within seconds, so as soon as you pull into work, you can remove the pads and store them in the tank bag or top case. They're only 10x6 inches, and they're pretty soft and flexible. The seat and knees are fortified with Cordura 500D and a cotton lining inside, so there is some abrasion resistance in the typical crash areas. No hip pads, sadly. The left pic shows the armor inside, and the right shows it removed. Amazingly, they fit over my Sidi boots without looking like bell-bottoms when I get to work and change into loafers. I like these! The final writeup will go to Rider magazine.

In other news, the Helite Turtle Airbag review easily became my most popular video ever, just surpassing over 1,000 views since Sunday night. Good news!

I've been testing this Adaptiv Technologies TPX 2.0 Radar & Laser detector for Motorcycle Consumer News. I don't have the cooperation of the local cops, nor do I own expensive testing equipment, so this one's going to be anecdotal. How? By actively seeking out speed traps in Waze, and purposefully going there. NJ has the highest speeding ticket prices in the nation, and the most speed traps per mile of any state. This is one risky experiment!

Remus Hexacone

The #Remus #Hexacone test is all done and handed in to MCN. It's probably just going to squeak into the September issue, which means I need to hustle if I'm going to make a video for it. The Remus will have to be Episode 10, then. I hope the readers tune into my Youtube channel to hear the pipe for themselves. I'm split on it - I love the extra bark when blasting around the mountain roads and riding more aggressively, but on the highway for my extended commute at speed, I wish I had the stock (quieter) silencer on. It's such a subjective issue.

Still working on my top secret non-product related article and suffering from writer's block and lack of organization in the piece. Usually what I do there is write little parts and then put them together later when my brain starts working again (which it does, on rare occasion.)

450 miles of NY/PA/NJ twisties on the way home from #DasRally today. Why can't every day be this much fun? I've got a pile of work in front of me now - came home to a few boxes from my friends at #Aerostich and a few other odds and ends. I was running close to dry, and now I've got too much to test!

#DasRally Day 3!

Das Rally is over, FAR too soon! It was so much fun - everyone was so friendly and helpful. I spent another day with the vendors - no riding today. Can't talk yet about the subject of an upcoming feature article, but I had extensive interviewing to do.

A few more products came in for review, so I've gone from running dry to being overwhelmed with testing to do, not to mention videos for the Moto Mouth channel. Lots and lots of work to do, but first, there is the ride home tomorrow!

Here are some cool bikes from the vintage stand today.....

#DasRally Day 2!

We managed to tear ourselves away from the vendors for a bit (which was hard) in order to explore upstate NY. Beautiful "invisible" roads all over the place - the stuff of moto-dreams! Here are some pictures from today....

At every BMW Rally, you see an artful example of customized fabrication, like the above. Check out that front brake!

6,000 BMWs - and all is operating like clockwork...

Finally got to hit the road today - and it's fantastic up here!

#DasRally Day 1

What a fun first day at #DasRally!

Met lots of old friends I haven't seen in years, and made some new ones. I spent the whole day talking to vendors about new products and technologies that are going to potentially change motorcycling forever!

The antique display had loads of awesome old BMW, as well as a WWII experimental Harley with a flat twin engine!

Klaus Hueneke's incredible Munch from Germany...

With Andrew Serbinski of Machineart Moto, and his tricked out R1200RS....

With Jim Morabito of King of Fleece, and photobomb by the legendary motorcycle seat craftsman Rocky Mayer.

With Carl Reese, the Guinness World Records record-holding professional endurance rider....

Glen Stasky of Clearwater Lights....

Small world: I sold my Sapphire Back 2009 R1200RT back in 2014, and its current owner somehow recognized my 2015 RT in the parking lot and snapped this picture of the two bike together!

Hopefully, today we'll get some riding in....

Made It To Hamburg for #DasRally!

Hello All-

400+ miles of pure backroads through NJ/PA/NY, and we finally arrived in Hamburg around 7:30pm. So many BMWs swarming around in this little town. It got me thinking - I haven't been to an MOA rally since 2006! I rode in and camped with my then-girlfriend (now wife - 2 kids later!) We got soaked that year....

Today was fun, but exhausting. We only took a few pics on the way in....

Testing the SENA 10C on this trip, so hopefully I'll have some videos soon. I'm going to sleep now - busy day tomorrow!

New Arrivals - Scorpion EXO-GT3000

Hello All-

The Motoport Kevlar Air Mesh Overpants video generated more questions and feedback than any other so far - good! That means I should do the jacket soon, too. A #Scorpion EXO-GT3000 modular helmet showed up today as well. It's very comfy so far, and I can't wait to put it through its paces.

But most of all, I can't wait to go to #DasRally in Hamburg, NY. The BMW-MOA's annual rally is going to be so much fun! Over 100 vendors, old friends, and new folks I'm anxious to meet from our forum discussions. Just one day left before we depart!
